DeepStack Championship Poker Series is the largest high stakes poker tournament series at The Venetian. Named by USA Today as one of the best Vegas poker tournament series, it kicks off the beginning of summer, running from May to July. To everyone’s surprise, last week the Golden Nugget Atlantic City opened its brand new poker room to the public. The room, which was closed earlier this year, is now located “in a luxurious. The Golden Nugget is one of the most famous poker rooms in Las Vegas. “The Nugget” is seen by many as the spiritual home of legendary televised poker show High Stakes Poker — with its High Roller Suite being witness to some of the biggest and most dramatic pots in TV history. As the name suggests, the Golden Nugget Poker Room maintains the casino’s gold rush theme. Our poker room hosts 13 smoke-free tables, comfortable seats and plush decor. Tables are fitted with golden felt and sit below spotlight lampshades that emit low levels of filtered, golden light. Deep, velvet-backed chairs are around the tables and allow you to sink back in great comfort when contemplating tough decisions. Flat-panel TVs are placed above each table and display tournament information at such close range so that even short-sighted players can stay on the pulse of the action. All tables are equipped with phone chargers as well.
Various levels of live cash poker games are always available from beginner low limits to No Limit action like you see on TV. We have a high hand bonus promotion for our cash games, where if you make quads or a straight flush using both cards in your hand you win a bonus of the posted amount. Golden Nugget keeping poker land-based for now
While it’s land-based poker room is thriving, Golden Nugget resisted the urge to launch an NJ online poker room unlike most of its competitors.
That move proved to be profitable for the casino that continues to dominate the New Jersey online casino market regarding revenue. Online poker rooms continue to struggle, with only Caesars’WSOP.com NJ online poker room posting month-to-month growth in June. Caesars’ growth is likely attributed to shared liquidity with Nevada and Delaware.
It is no small feat for Golden Nugget online casino to continually earn double the amount of its nearest competitor, Borgata. Its June NJ online casino revenue saw a 50 percent increase year-over-year and is driving the entire NJ online casino industry in the Garden State.
Will Golden Nugget’s command of the online casino market remain once the full array of online sports betting enters the picture? Only time will tell. We’ll have to wait until September to find out. That’s when August revenue reports will surface.
Is poker a dying “sport” in New Jersey?
Shared liquidity was supposed to save the New Jersey online poker industry. That doesn’t seem to be the case, however. Year-over-year, online poker revenue remains relatively flat, showing minimal growth of only 1.28 percent.

The declining trend isn’t only playing out online either. The revenue from New Jersey’s physical poker rooms accounts for only 0.9 percent of the entire casino operations in June.
Year-over-year numbers for New Jersey poker rooms saw a 3.9 percent decline in revenue. Overall casino revenue, however, showed a solid increase of 5.1 percent.
Six of the nine Atlantic City casinos have a poker room. Here they are with their June revenue figures:
- Borgata ($1,161,217)
- Bally’s ($238,339)
- Harrah’s ($226,665)
- Tropicana ($199,420)
- Golden Nugget ($97,937)
- Ocean Resort Casino ($12,514)
Borgata is the clear leader regarding revenue — by far. And besides Ocean Resort, which was only open for a few days in June, Golden Nugget brings up the rear.
With poker only a fraction of the casino’s revenue and such a dismal outlook for poker in Atlantic City, the question remains: Why is Golden Nugget investing in a new and improved poker room?
Maybe it hopes a new look, upgraded amenities, and more promotions will bring players back to the tables. Looking at the industry, though, it will more than likely take more than free Wi-Fi and a buffet to make the poker room profitable.
Maybe, just maybe, the poker room’s move to the fourth floor is making room for a sportsbook. Of course, this is pure speculation, and Golden Nugget has been keeping plans on that front close to the vest.
One thing that holds true is it’s in an Atlantic City casino’s best interest to provide a complete gaming experience for its customers. And for now, that includes a poker room.
